March 2022, Fermenstation Co., Ltd. obtained an international certification “B Corp” as the first-certified Japanese startup (J-startup company certified by METI). Our corporate activity in an attempt to pursue both business feasibility and social impact is well evaluated. “B Corp certification” is the system under the management by “B Lab”, a non-profit organization established in the US in 2006. This authorizes companies that provide public benefits and meet the stringent requirements such as:
– Consideration for environment and society and pursuit of impact
– Relationship with all stakeholders including employees considering for locality and diversity
– Transparency of management
– Business sustainability

[ We hope to make a renewable society through fermentation ]
Fermenstation has set its purpose “Fermenting a Renewable Society” meaning that we would achieve a society circulated by the power of fermentation. We have developed upcycled ethanol produced through fermentation of unused biomass such as non-standard agricultural products and food/beverage waste. In addition, solid leftover (ferment lees) generated after fermentation is utilized as cosmetic ingredient or feed for livestock, which then produce excrement to be ultimately used as fertilizer for paddy fields. By circulating the entire part of our business, we have been trying to make a positive impact on environment and society.

[ Through B Corp certification, recognized business feasibility and sociality are simultaneously achieved ]
To keep balancing and enhancing business feasibility and sociality is critical for Fermenstation to achieve our purpose. Owing to the certification from B Corp which evaluates business activities producing diverse benefits for local community, environment, customers and employees, we recognized that our direction is promising from an objective point of view. B Corp reviews every 3 years making B Corp an objective and periodic way for us to review our business activities and management.

[ Fermenstation Co., Ltd. ]
Fermenstation is providing a solution to upcycle and circulate unused biomass using its proprietary fermentation technology. Our solutions range from manufacturing and sales of cosmetic raw materials to co-development of original materials. Utilization of unused biomass such as food waste, non-standard agricultural products and abandoned farmland remains to be solved. However, to overcome this issue, a solution capable of upcycling a wide range of unused biomass to a variety of appropriate products is expected. Here, we provide a solution based on our fermentation technology platform that allows us to handle diverse unused biomass and turn them into value-added products.
