Commercialization of ethanol production from woods such as thinned woods: fermentation byproduct upcycled to fermented extract for cosmetic ingredient via joint development with Nippon Zettoc.

May 10th, 2023

Fermenstation Co., Ltd., a technology-based startup attempting to establish a renewable society by its proprietary fermentation upcycling technology, has commercialized ethanol production from woods such as thinned woods and plans to release it as a new product for cosmetic ingredient.

Moreover, Fermenstation and Nippon Zettoc Co., Ltd. (Headquarter: Tokyo, CEO: Sadao Jinbo) developed a fermented extract from woods as cosmetic ingredient utilizing byproduct generated during ethanol fermentation. We are also releasing this new product as “Sakura-wood fermented extract” named after its fermentation resource, the woody part of “Yamazakura”, a kind of cherry tree. In conventional biomanufacturing, the fermented residue is often discarded. However, in this collaboration, every part of the wood is upcycled to value-added raw materials, ethanol, and a fermented extract, without generating waste.

Product name: Sakura wood fermented extract (BG)
INCI Name: Saccharomyces/Prunus Serrulata Wood Ferment Extract Filtrate, Butylene Glycol

The fermentation resource, Yamazakura, is a part of felled trees from the forest in Iwaizumi-cho, Iwate. 90% of the town is filled with woodland making the town well known for the forest industry. In order to maintain light penetration all around the forest and keep its biodiversity, old trees are periodically cut down. Our “Sakura wood fermented extract” utilized them as the blessings of natural ecosystem.

[Fermenstation Co., Ltd.]
Fermenstation is providing a solution to upcycle and circulate unused biomass using its proprietary fermentation technology. Our solutions range from manufacturing and sales of cosmetic raw materials to co-development of original materials. Utilization of unused biomass such as food waste, non-standard agricultural products, and abandoned farmland remains to be solved. However, to overcome this issue, a solution capable of upcycling a wide range of unused biomass to a variety of appropriate products is expected. Here, we provide a solution based on our fermentation technology platform that allows us to handle diverse unused biomass and turn them into value-added products.
